Dream Feeds: A Gentle Way to Handle Early Morning Wake-Ups
10/1/20262 min read
I'm currently working with a mom whose baby wakes once at night for a feed. That part is fine. The tough part is the early morning wake-up that follows. Once her daughter wakes at 3, 4, or 5am, she just can't get back to sleep, which kicks off the day far too early and disrupts naps and the whole schedule.
Why early morning wake-ups are so hard to fix
It comes down to two things:
Low sleep drive. Sleep pressure builds the longer baby is awake and drops as she sleeps. By the early morning hours, she has already banked a lot of sleep, so the pressure is low.
Low melatonin. Melatonin, the hormone that helps us stay asleep, naturally drops toward morning. So her body has less help staying asleep.
Put those together and you get a baby who wakes lightly and can't find her way back. That isn't a habit problem. It's biology.
Enter the dream feed
A dream feed is a planned feeding where you gently rouse baby (just enough to feed) while she still has strong sleep drive, then lay her back down asleep.
For this client, the plan is to wake her daughter around 1am, offer a feed, and put her right back to bed. The idea is that a well-timed feed earlier in the night can help carry baby through that tricky early morning window.
Dream feed vs. a natural night feed
These are easy to mix up, but they serve different goals:
Dream feed: You pick the time. Baby is roused just enough to eat and goes back down asleep.
Natural wake-up feed: Baby wakes on her own. Here, we typically want to put her back in her bed awake, so she keeps practicing independent settling.
Is a dream feed right for your baby?
It may be worth considering if:
Your baby is roughly 5 to 8 months old
She wakes early (around 3-5am) and has trouble resettling
Those early wakings are disrupting her morning and nap schedule
It's not a one-size-fits-all fix. Timing, age, feeding needs, and what's causing the wake-ups all matter, and sometimes the real culprit is something else entirely, like a schedule issue or sleep associations.
